Time apart can lead to divorce

On Behalf of | May 3, 2025 | Divorce Financial Planning |

When many people think of reasons for divorce, they imagine extreme events that derail the marriage. An example could be discovering that your partner was having an affair or experiencing domestic violence.

While these types of events certainly can end a marriage, it is important to note that the reasons are often much simpler. Even something as basic as spending too much time apart from your spouse can cause your relationship to begin to erode.

A long commute

One example is having a commute that takes over 45 minutes. This has been shown to increase your risk of divorce. The problem isn’t necessarily where you live or where you work, but the time commitment itself. When you combine this commuting time with working hours, there is often very little time left to spend with your spouse and children. Over time, this lack of quality time can strain the relationship.

A military career

Similarly, those who serve in the military tend to have relatively high divorce rates. One reason is that military careers often require intense training, long hours and long-term deployments. When one spouse is away for months at a time, it can put a serious strain on their romantic relationship and their connection to family life at home.

Your legal options

If you find yourself moving toward divorce, it is important to understand how to file the necessary paperwork, divide assets, determine parenting time and address other key legal matters. Be sure you are aware of all of your rights and the steps you can take to protect your future.
